A chronology of key events in the history of the NISER Central Library

2007
Library started functioning
The Central Library of NISER commenced its operations in 2007, coinciding with the institute's inception. Initially, the library was housed in the temporary premises of the Institute of Physics Campus, which served as a temporary location for NISER during that period.

2008
First Chairman
Professor Jnanadeva Maharana, a visiting faculty member at NISER, served as the inaugural Chairman of the library.

First Convenor
Dr. A V Anil Kumar, a Reader-F at SPS, had the honor of being the first Convener of the Library.

2009
First Library Staff Joined
On August 20, 2009, Dr. Jitendra Narayan Dash became the first member to join the Central Library team.

Starting of Journal Subscription
In 2009, the library subscribed to its first journal.

Launching of Library Website
In September 2009, the Computer Centre developed and launched the library website.

Implementation of Library Automation Software (LIBSYS)
In December 2009, the first Library Automation Software, LIBSYS, was implemented.

Starting of Recruitement of Library Apprentice
In 2009, the first library apprentice was recruited and joined under the guidance of the Board of Practical Training (BoPT).

First Book Exhibition
In 2009, the Central Library Team successfully organized the inaugural Book Exhibition.

Second Library Staff Joined
On November 12, 2009, Mr. S K Safatulla became the second member to join the Central Library team.

2010
Introduction of Institutional Digital Repository
In 2010, the Library Electronic Repository initiated the online submission of publications.

Starting of Procurement of E-Books
The Central Library made its first e-book purchase in 2010.

2011
Third Library Staff Joined
On September 12, 2011, Ms. Suchismita Dash became the third member to join the Central Library team.

Fourth Library Staff Joined
On September 15, 2011, Mr. Rabindra Kumar Maharana became the fourth member to join the Central Library team.

2012
Second Chairman
Professor Palok Aich, a member of the faculty at the School of Biological Sciences-NISER, took on the role of the library's second Chairman.

2014
Implementation of KOHA & RFID Service
In 2014, the Library successfully implemented the migration of Koha, an Integrated Library Management Software, along with the introduction of RFID-enabled services.

2015
Shifting of Library from transit campus to permanent campus
Following NISER's relocation to its new independent campus in Jatni in 2015, the Library was also moved to the permanent campus. It commenced its operations on the 5th floor of the Chemical Sciences Building.

2016
Establishment of SMS Departmental Library
In the year 2016, with the assistance of the Central Library, the Department of Mathematical Sciences established its first departmental library.

Establishment of SPS Departmental Library
In 2016, the Department of Physical Sciences established its departmental library with the support of the Central Library.

2017
Inauguration of Library Building
In January 2017, NISER Director, Professor V Chandrasekhar, inaugurated the new three-story Library Building.

Fifth Library Staff Joined
On November 07, 2017, Mr. Bidyut Siba Sankar Mohanty became the fifth member to join the Central Library team.

Third Chairman
Dr. Praful S Singru, an Associate Professor at the School of Biological Sciences-NISER, assumed the position of the library's third Chairman.

2018
Starting of Recruitment of Library Professional Trainee
In 2018, the recruitment process for Library Professional Trainees commenced, and three trainees were successfully onboarded.

Starting of the Vendor Empanelment Process
In 2018, the first empanelment process was conducted, resulting in the selection of eleven vendors who were empanelled for a period of five years.

Subscription of Originality Checking Tool iThenticate
In 2018, the Library subscribed to the iThenticate originality checking tool, which has proven to be immensely beneficial in detecting instances of plagiarism.

2019
Collaboratively Organizing the NISER Book Exhibition with Empanelled Vendors and numerous Publishers
In order to enhance the academic experience of users, the Central Library collaborated with 11 empanelled vendors and multiple publishers to organize the NISER Book Exhibition from January 14-16, 2019.

2021
Establishment of CMRP Departmental Library
In the year 2021, with the assistance of the Central Library, the Centre for Medical and Radiological Physics established its departmental library.

Renovation work in the First and Second Floor of the Library Building
In 2021, the renovation work was concluded, resulting in the creation of spacious learning-centered areas within the library. Additionally, the renovated space now includes a seminar room, a central board room, as well as several group study areas.

Subscription of Writing Support Tool Grammarly
In 2021, the Library subscribed to the writing support tool Grammarly, which has proven to be a valuable resource for enhancing writing skills and ensuring grammatical accuracy.

Sixth Library Staff Joined
On March 19, 2021, Mr. Kapil Kumar Gupta joined the Central Library team as its sixth member.

Upgradation of the Library Website
With the assistance of the Computer Centre, the library website underwent an upgrade, incorporating new resources and services to enhance user experience.

Implementation of IRINS Faculty Profiles
Thanks to the library's initiative, the IRINS platform now features comprehensive research profiles of the faculty members at the institute.

Seventh Library Staff Joined
On August 02, 2021, Mr. Prasanna Kumar Muduli became the seventh member to join the Central Library team.

2022
Upgradation of Institutional Digital Repository
In 2022, the Institutional Digital Repository underwent an upgrade, enhancing its features and capabilities. It now preserves a wide-ranging collection of theses, dissertations, reports, and other scholarly works.

Inauguration of Children's Library
With the aim of providing a learning environment for children to explore and discover new things, the Central Library made efforts to establish a dedicated space. Prof. Sudhakar Panda, Director of NISER inaugurated this facility on December 11, 2022.

Introducing the Inception of NISER NewsCast Service
This initiative aims to engage and captivate the NISER community through informative, educational, and entertaining content displayed on in-campus digital screens provided by our Central Library.

Central Library Takes On Responsibility for Auditorium & Lecture Halls, Annual Report, and Bi-Annual Newsletter Preparation
The Central Library has been entrusted with the task of overseeing the management of the Auditorium and Lecture Halls, as well as preparing the Annual Report and Bi-Annual Newsletter for the Institute.

Eighth Library Staff Joined
On September 05, 2022, Mr. Subhas Das joined the Central Library team as its eighth member.

2023
Inauguration of Popular Science Section
To promote accessibility and understanding of science among individuals without a specialized scientific background, the Central Library inaugurated a Popular Science Section on February 28th, 2023.

Inauguration of Homi Bhabha Hall & Vikram Sarabhai Hall
The Central Library has established two seminar halls on the third floor, dedicated to hosting mini-conferences, workshops, seminars, and technical events. The Director of NISER officially inaugurated these seminar halls on April 27th, 2023.

Central Library has joined the NDLI Club Institutional Membership
Central Library at NISER has recently become a member of the NDLI Club, granting access to the wide range of content available on the National Digital Library of India (NDLI).

2024
Curating the NISER Book Exhibition in collaboration with Empanelled Vendors and an array of dynamic Publishers
In a spirited effort to enrich the academic journey of our users, the library joined forces with 15 empanelled vendors and a plethora of vibrant publishers to orchestrate the exhilarating NISER Book Exhibition, spanning from March 5th to 7th, 2024.

Open Access Publishing, Read & Publish Agreement with Wiley & Springer Nature
As part of ODOS, NISER Library has established an expansive Read-and-Publish agreement with Wiley & Springer Nature, covering over 1300+ Wiley Journals and 2200+ Springer Nature Journals. Running from April 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, this pact enhances global access to NISER's research.
