Welcome to our library's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page!

Here, we aim to address common queries and provide you with comprehensive information to enhance your library experience. If you don't find the answer you're looking for, please contact us for further assistance.

Where is central library located?

The central library spans three floors within the library building and is accessible directly from the first floor.

What are the library hours?

The library operates from 9:00 am to 11:00 pm every day of the year, and from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm on statutory holidays.

Can I bring my personal belongings to the library?

Certainly! You are allowed to bring your personal belongings to the library, including items such as books, notebooks, and laptops.

Are food and beverages allowed in the library?

Food and beverages are not allowed inside the library. However, you are welcome to bring your water bottle.

Can mobile phones be used in the library?

Using mobile phones in the library is highly discouraged.

Does the library provide any orientation program to the freshers?

Certainly! The institute's library offers an orientation program for students at the beginning of each academic session, as well as upon request and through student groups. For further details, please reach out to libniser@niser.ac.in.

Are there any group study areas in the libraries?

Yes, our library is designed to offer several user spaces for diverse reading. Explore library spaces here.

Can I leave my belongings (Laptop,Notebooks,water bottles etc)?

No, we highly discourage leaving personal belongings in the library for long period of time. Library team is not liable for any loss/damage to the personal belongings of a user in the Library.

What is the procedure of donating books to the Library?

To donate books, please complete our Book Donation Form and ensure that the materials are in good condition. With the donation form you may deliver the books to the library during designated donation hours. For any additional inquiries, please contact the library directly.

Who can use the NISER Central Library?

The library is open to all NISER students, research scholars, faculty, and staff. Visitors may access the library with prior permission.

Is photography allowed inside the library?

Photography is not permitted inside the library without prior approval from the library office.

Does the library have a lost and found facility?

Yes. Items found in the library are kept at the circulation desk. Users may check and claim lost belongings with valid identification.

Are laptops allowed inside the library?

Yes, laptops are allowed. Charging points are available at designated seating areas.

Is there a quiet study zone?

Yes, designated silent zones are available for users who prefer a disturbance-free study environment.

Does the library have air-conditioning?

Yes. All three floors of the library building are fully air-conditioned for comfortable study.

Where can I get help inside the library?

You can reach the staff at the circulation desk on the first floor or write to libniser@niser.ac.in for assistance.

What are the types of collections the NISER library has?

The library's collections include textbooks, reference books, Bound volumes of print journals, print magazines, theses and dissertations, a Hindi collection, an Odia collection, a popular science collection, and a children's collection.

I am a new Student/Staff/Faculty member. How do I get the library membership card?

Fill Membership Form, attach a photocopy of your NISER ID card, and submit it to the circulation desk of the central library.

Do, I need an ID Card to borrow?

Yes, the NISER ID card is mandatory for borrowing any physical resource from the Library.

How can i get Institute ID card RFID enabled?

To enable RFID functionality on your ID card, please visit the Circulation Desk and present your card to the staff member on duty. They will assist you and complete the activation for you.

How can I borrow books using an RFID Kiosk?
  • Click on “Issue/Borrow” on the screen.
  • Place your Institute ID card on the machine.
  • Place the books (one at a time for thicker books) on the scan bed and ensure all details appear on the screen.
  • Click on “Borrow.” Once the items are processed, click “Exit.” Choose “Yes” for the receipt.
  • Collect the receipt with all checkout details, including the due date. A copy will also be sent to your registered email address.
How can I Return books using an RFID Kiosk?
  • Place your Institute ID card on the machine.

  • Click on “Return.” Once the items are processed, click “Exit.” Select “Yes” for the receipt.

Can I put a book on hold so I can borrow it when it is returned?

Yes, you can reserve the book issued to another user. For more details, Click Here

How can I find out when a library item is due?

Upon the due date of your library item, you will receive an email notification. Additionally, you will be informed if an item you borrowed becomes overdue. You can also access the due date by logging into your account on the WEB OPAC.

When do library late return fees begin to accrue and how much are library late return fees?

Late fees at the library start accumulating the day after the item is due, including Sundays and other holidays. For general items, the late fee is Rs. 5 per day.

What is the purpose of the gates at the entrance of the Library?

The RFID security gates are placed to ensure that all library books are issued properly before leaving the library premises. The gates alerts whenever a book is being taken out without being issued to a patron. It also records gate counts or footfalls.

Can I recall an item that is currently Checked Out?

No, not in ordinary situations. However, you may reserve it for yourself. For very urgent requirements, you may write to librarian@niser.ac.in.

How do I pay a library late return fee?

You can settle late fees through UPI payment.

How do I renew an item I have checked out?

You get an id password when you register yourself to the library. Through the ID, you can do the same. For more details, Click Here

How many times can I renew borrowed books?

If the book is not held by another user, you have the option to renew borrowed books up to nine times.

If I cannot come physically to the library and the books are overdue, what can be done?

Accrued overdue charges must be reported promptly by email to the library/librarian.

How do I use Self Check-out facility?

The library is equipped with a self-service RFID Kiosk to facilitate the self-Issue or renewal of books. For more details, Click Here

How do I borrow the reference books?

Reference books are not available for borrowing.

How do I distinguish reference books from other library books?

Reference books are stored in dedicated sections of the library and are marked with "R" on the binding side. These books are not available for borrowing.

Can I borrow multimedia items like CDs, DVDs, or maps?

Yes, selected multimedia items are available for borrowing. The borrowing duration and limits may vary based on the item type.

Can someone else borrow books on my behalf?

No. Borrowing on behalf of another user is not allowed. The library requires the physical presence of the ID card holder for all transactions.

What should I do if the RFID Kiosk does not read my ID card?

If your card is not detected by the kiosk, please visit the circulation desk. Staff will check the RFID chip and assist with reactivation if needed.

What happens if the kiosk fails to issue or return a book?

If the kiosk shows an error or fails to complete the transaction, please contact the circulation desk immediately. Staff can manually issue or accept the return.

Can I borrow books without my physical ID card?

No. The physical ID card is required for all borrowing and returning activities. Digital or scanned copies are not accepted.

Can I borrow newly arrived books?

Yes. Newly added books displayed in the library or OPAC can be borrowed unless they are marked as reference or on hold for processing.

Does the library send reminders before books are due?

Yes. Reminder emails are sent before the due date, but users are responsible for tracking their borrowed items through their library account.

Can I borrow books from other schools or departments?

Books from departmental libraries may follow separate circulation rules. Please check with the respective department library for borrowing policies.

What should I do if a book I borrowed is damaged?

Please report the damage immediately to the circulation desk. Charges may apply depending on the extent of damage.

Can I check out books during exams?

Yes. Borrowing services remain available during exams. However, demand is usually high, so early borrowing is recommended.

How do I replace a lost book (What am I required to do for a lost book)?

If a borrower loses a book, they are required to either purchase the most recent edition of the book or pay the price of the latest edition plus a twenty percent (20%) processing fee.

How are books organize in the Library?

Books are arranged Subject-wise according to Universal Decimal Classification scheme.

How do I find materials in the library?

Search the Online Catalog for the book's particulars like Call no. and Accession no. and search in the shelves with those particulars. For any additional help, contact the circulation desk or ask any staff of the Library.

How do I search our library catalog?

You can search the library catalog at https://opac.niser.ac.in/ by the full or partial title, author name, Subject, ISBN, series, and Call number. For more details, Click Here.

What is a call number? How can I locate a book using a call number in Book Shelves?

The call number represents the assigned subject number of the book. Books are arranged alphabetically according to their call numbers.

How do I search for a thesis/dissertation written by a NISER member?

Ph.D. Theses and M.Sc. Dissertations are cataloged and can be searched in the Online catalog or the users can login in to the IDR, and browse as per their concern subject.

Where can I find a digital copy of a textbook?

You can find it in the subscribed e-books section. For more details, Click Here.

How do I check if the full text of journal articles are available?

In the E-Journals A-Z search page, all the subscribed journals are sorted in A-Z order and also users can filter the journals by title, publisher or subject wise. For more details, Click Here.

Does the library have multiple copies of the textbooks?

Yes, based on faculty recommendations, multiple copies are available in limited numbers for Indian editions only; otherwise, only one copy will be accessible.

How do I find dissertations on my subject?

Hard copies of NISER Alumni Theses and Dissertations are available in the library, situated on the 2nd Floor, at the front of the Technical & Acquisition section. The soft copies are avialabe in Institutional Digital Repository.

What shall I do if I do not get the book on the shelve?

Initially, please reach out to the library staff responsible for shelving books in the specific area. If your concern remains unresolved, kindly contact the staff at the circulation desk or the librarian for further assistance.

Do I need a password to use electronic resources?

The publisher provides IP-based access for the NISER community, so please use the campus LAN or Wi-Fi for smooth access.

Why am I asked for an User ID or Payment when I try to view an article?

When using a non-NISER server or trying to view unsubscribed content, this message may appear.

Can I recommend the library for a book or any other resources to purchase?

Students may recommend, with the consultation and authorization of faculty.

Where can I find reference books?

Reference books such as encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries, and atlases are available in the Reference Section. These items are for library use only and cannot be issued.

Does the library provide access to online databases?

Yes, the library subscribes to several research databases covering science, mathematics, humanities, and interdisciplinary subjects. These can be accessed through the E-Resources section on the library website.

How do I access e-resources from outside campus?

Remote access is available through the library’s Web-VPN Portal for authorized users. Login credentials are required. For support, contact the Digital Section.

Does the library subscribe to newspapers and magazines?

Yes, the library provides printed newspapers and magazines in the Reading Hall. Selected e-newspapers and e-magazines are also available on the library website.

How can I access standards or technical reports?

Access to standards or technical reports depends on the subscription. Please contact the Technical and Acquisition Section for availability or assistance.

Where can I find journals in print format?

Print journals are available on the first floor in the Journal Section. Current issues are displayed on racks, and back issues are arranged by title for browsing.

Is there a section for competitive exam books?

Yes, selected books for competitive exams and general reading are available in the General Books/Reading Section.

Are there any subject-specific collections?

Yes, major subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Humanities have dedicated shelves organized according to UDC.

Can I access multimedia resources?

The library hosts selected CDs, DVDs, and audio-visual material. These items are available upon request at the circulation desk.

Does the library provide online tutorials or guides?

Yes, user guides and instructional videos for using OPAC, databases, and e-resources are available in the User Guide section on the library website.

Where can I explore new books recently added?

Newly acquired books are displayed in the New Arrivals section on the website and at the designated New Arrivals display near the circulation desk.

How can I be alerted to new items acquired by the Library?

How do I get a library username and password for Online Catalogue?

Upon registering as a member of the central library, you will receive your ID password via email.

How do I log in to check my loan record?

Go to "Online Catalog". On the top right corner, you will find “Log in to your account.” Enter your username and password to view your loan record. For more details, click here.

How do I connect to WiFi inside the library?

The library utilizes the institute's network, so you may continue using it as usual. Should you encounter any difficulties, please get in touch with the Digital Section for assistance.

Currently, I am not on campus. How do I access subscribed resources that are available in the Library?

Library provides the off campus access to the e-resources through VPN. For more details in establishing the VPN connection, Click Here.

Does the library provide computers for accessing e-resources?

Yes, desktops are available in the Digital Section for accessing the catalog, databases, e-journals, e-books, and other online resources.

Is there a platform to access my reading history?

Yes. After logging into your library account through the Online Catalog, you can view your reading history, past loans, and current checkouts.

Can I access library resources on my mobile phone?

Yes, the Online Catalog and most subscribed platforms support mobile access. For best performance, use the latest browser version on your device.

Does the library provide support for reference management tools like Mendeley or Zotero?

Yes, the Digital Section provides basic assistance for installing and using tools such as Mendeley and Zotero. Training sessions can also be arranged on request.

How do I know if a database is not working?

If an e-resource is temporarily inaccessible, a notification is posted on the library website under “News and Updates.” You may also report issues directly to the Digital Section.

Can I use VPN on my mobile to access e-resources?

Yes. VPN access works on laptops and mobile devices. Install the institute’s VPN client and configure it as per the user guide.

Does the library provide training sessions on using digital tools?

The library periodically conducts user awareness sessions on databases, plagiarism tools, OPAC, VPN, and other digital services. Notices are shared via email and the library website.

What is Grammarly? How can I create my account in Grammarly Premium?

Grammarly is a cross-platform writing assistant that reviews spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, and, to an extent, plagiarism of a document. For Grammarly account details, Click Here.

How can I effectively manage references/citations as well as save bibliographic details of the documents referred?

For effective recording and utilising bibliographic citations, we recommend using Reference Management Softwares, such as Zotero, EndNote, JabRef, Mendeley, RefWorks etc.

What is a scholarly or academic journal?

Scholarly or peer-reviewed journal articles are written by scholars or professionals who are experts in their fields.

What is peer review?

Peer review is the evaluation of work by one or more people with similar competencies as the work producers.

How can I get help with my literature search?

You may request assistance from the library’s Research Support team. They can guide you in identifying relevant databases, search strategies, and suitable keywords for your topic.

Does the library help in finding impact factors or journal rankings?

Yes. The library can guide you on how to check journal metrics such as Impact Factor, CiteScore, and SCImago rankings. You may contact the Research Support team for help.

Can I get assistance in choosing a journal for my research publication?

The library staff can help you understand journal scopes, indexing, and quality indicators so you can choose a suitable journal for your work. Final decisions should be made in consultation with your supervisor.

Does the library provide support for managing research data?

The library offers guidance on best practices for storing, organizing, and citing research data. For project-specific needs, please get in touch with the Digital Section.

Can the library borrow documents from other libraries?

Can I access NISER-subscribed electronic journals, books, and databases from off campus?

What if the book or journal article I need is not available in the NISER Library?

How do I request access to a journal or database not currently subscribed by the library?

You may send your request to libniser@niser.ac.in with details such as journal title, publisher, ISSN, and why it is required for your teaching or research.

How do I access electronic resources when travelling for conferences or fieldwork?

You can access subscribed e-resources using the Web VPN service. For configuration instructions, refer to the VPN guide available on the library website or contact the Digital Section for support.

Can I donate books or journals to the library?

Yes, the Library accepts donations that support the academic and research needs of the institute. Please share the list of proposed items with libniser@niser.ac.in before sending them, so staff can confirm suitability.

May I take photographs in the Library?

Yes, you may with permission.
